Southern Miss student-athlete talks about abrupt end to season

Amory, Miss. (WTVA) – Aubrey Gillentines sophomore season at Southern Mississippi was cut short due to the corona virus.

When the NCAA announced that all spring championships would be canceled, Conference USA followed.

A team meeting was held the day before conference play began against Florida International.

“They scheduled another meeting for the next day and he told us that the rest of the season was going to be cancelled and that we wouldn’t be playing anymore baseball this year,” said Gillentine. “It is so difficult you work all your life to play baseball like you love.”

The former stud from Amory feels for his fellow panthers with high baseball season up in the air.

“It is tough a lot of them are not going to get the chance to play at the next level,” said the righty. “So this is what they live for and what they have been waiting for their whole life.”

The right-hander spent some of the 2020 season injured, and hopes the NCAA follows through with the proposition to offer extended eligibnility to spring athletes.

“My ultimate goal is to play professionally so that last year could help me develop into a better player,” said Gillentine.
