TUPELO, Miss. (WTVA) — Most of the interviews I’ve done regarding the cancellation of spring sports can be summed up in two words: it stinks. However, even though the future of athletics looks bleak right now, a Mississippi man is trying his best to give seniors the send off they deserve.
“When I saw they got their season canceled I was like you know what, I’m going to do something to get their senior game,” USSSA Softball Director Heath Fullilove said.
He reached out to some contacts in the business and got the ball rolling. He posted the idea on Facebook and the response was staggering.
“We’ve got at least 200 girls, and probably 150 boys that want to play in that senior game,” Fullilove said.
Since the post, they’ve got a website up for players to register. You can be from anywhere in Mississippi and is free for seniors. They’re planning on playing the game at MTrade park in Oxford. The obvious obstacle in the way of the game is when they can play.
“We don’t have any plans on when its going to happen, we just know we’re going to make it happen as soon as we can, as soon as the rules allow us to,” Fullilove said.
The goal is late May, early June. Right now, they’re gathering sponsorships to give these seniors the send off they deserve.
“We’re going to give baseballs, softballs, roses for the moms, maybe a small plaque recognizing every senior,” Fullilove said. “Let them play just one more game to have a close to their season you know something they didn’t get to have.”
